The Foundation of Our Faith: Living by the Breath of God

The Foundation of Our Faith: Living by the Breath of God

In a world filled with shifting opinions and “alternative truths,” where can we find a solid place to stand? The Apostle Paul provides the answer in his second letter to Timothy, offering a definitive declaration on the nature and purpose of the Bible:

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

The Divine Origin

When we open our Bibles, we are not merely reading a collection of ancient historical documents or moral fables. We are encountering words breathed out by God. Because God is the ultimate author, His Word carries His authority. It is by faith that we believe what the Scripture says about itself: that it is the living breath of the Creator, given to us so we may truly know Him.

The Purpose of Revelation

Why did God speak? He did so to reveal His heart to us. In these pages, God tells us how He thinks, what He desires, and how He plans to save us. While we often attribute emotions and thoughts to humanity, we must remember that we were made in His image. The Bible is God’s way of bridging the gap, showing us His attributes and inviting us into a relationship with the Divine. It is a complete map for the soul—covering history, instruction, and discipline.

A Practical Tool for Transformation

Paul emphasizes that Scripture is “profitable.” It is not just for intellectual study; it is for practical application. It serves four vital functions:

  • Teaching: Showing us the right path.
  • Reproof: Warning us when we step off the path.
  • Correction: Showing us how to get back on the path.
  • Training in Righteousness: Teaching us how to stay on the path.

When we submit to the Word, it corrects our hearts and directs our minds. It tells us how to think because it tells us what God thinks.

Why This Matters Today

In the following verses, Paul warns that a time is coming when people will “not endure sound teaching” but will instead seek out voices that “suit their own passions” (2 Timothy 4:3-4). We live in that time. Without the anchor of Scripture, we are prone to wander into myths and follow our own fleeting desires.

The Word of God is truth. It is the only resource that can make us “complete” and “equipped” for every good work. Let us commit ourselves to being a people of the Book, finding our direction, our conviction, and our hope in the very breath of God.
